Downtown Sarasota The theme of this year’s Veterans Day parade will be “We Can Do It”, made famous by the fictional Rosie the Riveter WW2 icon. The parade will by hosted by the city of Sarasota and the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee. The Veterans Day Parade begins at 10am at Main Street and Osprey Street and ends at approximately 11am on the corner of Main Street and Gulfstream Avenue where a ceremony honoring Veterans will be held.

November 11, 2017: There is a Veterans’ Day Observance and Ceremony at Patriot’s Park in Venice: Venetia Bay Boulevard just off Rt. 41 south of Roberts Bay on the east side of Rt 41 (just north of the Legacy Trail Bridge over Rt. 41 in Venice), 800 Venetia Bay Blvd. Ceremonies are from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Patriot’s Park. November 11, 2017: The Rotary Club of Longboat Key will be sponsoring the 4th LBK Annual Veterans Day Parade and Honor Program. The parade route begins at the Longboat Key Bank of America and ends at the Temple Beth Israel entrance, approximately ¼ mile. A Veterans Honor Program, refreshments, and socializing will immediately follow the parade. The Veterans Day Parade and Honor Program is open to ALL Longboat Key veterans, their family and friends who live, rent, work, worship or are visiting on Longboat Key. Longboat Key encourages all veterans from Allied nations along with their families and friends to participate. November 11, 2017: Diocese of Venice Bishop Frank Dewane will celebrate Mass at Sarasota National Cemetery to recognize the sacrifices of those who served in the Armed Forces of the United States, to honor them, and to pray for the repose of their eternal souls – as well as for the intentions of the living. Prior to Mass, patriotic music will be played by the Sarasota Brass, hymns sung by a vocalist from the Tampa and St. Petersburg Opera Companies, an oversized floral wreath will be dedicated, and a K of C Color Guard will present and post the national and papal colors – accompanied by the singing of our national anthem. The event will be held in the Amphitheater, located in Patriot Plaza of the National Cemetery, beginning at 2:00 p.m., with Mass starting promptly at 3:00 p.m. Active military personnel are encouraged to wear their uniform. Memorial Day is the first big holiday weekend of the summer season and Siesta Key is calling your name!

Hotels are very full this weekend with visitors coming from all over the state and the country.  The island restaurants will also be very busy, so plan accordingly. SARASOTA COUNTY – Parents who are looking for healthy activities for their kids this summer will find it at the Kids’ Summer Beach Runs, presented by Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources, and New Balance Sarasota.

Free early registration will be offered to the first 100 kids who register at the New Balance Sarasota, New Balance University Park and Fleet Feet Sports Sarasota stores, from 3-7 p.m., on Wednesday, June 1. The one-time, $1 registration fee will be paid by New Balance Sarasota for registrations collected at these locations only.

The Kids’ Summer Beach Runs are offered every week this summer beginning Tuesday, June 7, at Siesta Beach, 948 Beach Road, Siesta Key; and Wednesday, June 8, at Brohard Beach, 1600 Harbor Dr., Venice.

At Siesta Beach, registration will be at the picnic pavilion near the playground, and in Venice the registration will be near Fins at Sharky’s.

Beach Run Information:

  • Registration at each location begins at 5:30 p.m.
  • The one-mile runs start promptly at 6:30 p.m.
  • The Siesta Beach Run is on Tuesdays.
  • The Venice Beach Run is on Wednesdays.
  • A one-time registration fee of $1 lets kids participate in as many beach runs as they want.

Kids are encouraged to dress up to match the theme and earn a prize. Themed photo opportunities will be offered each week.

Kids who complete four runs receive a free event T-shirt and a 50-percent-off voucher for a pair of New Balance Kids shoes. The runs can be completed at either location. All runners receive a ribbon and a free ice-pop each time they participate.
