Sarasota County-

Get in the holiday spirit with the annual Sandy Claws Beach Run, which returns Dec. 9 for its 41st year on Siesta Beach.

With many participants wearing fun holiday costumes, this annual event sponsored by Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources in partnership with Dr. Heidi K. Anderson-DOCS draws hundreds of runners, walkers and joggers to the No. 1 beach in the nation for the 5K run and one-mile fun run.

Early registration deadline is Nov. 20. Participants may also register by Dec. 4 for a reduced rate, but registration will also be available the day of the event. Early registration also guarantees a collectible long-sleeve event shirt and a gift bag. Race-day registrants receive event shirts while supplies last.

There will be kinesiology (body movement) taping offered both pre- and post-race and holiday photo opportunities during the event. Runners will also be invited to participate in holiday-themed costume contest.

The 5K run is sanctioned by the Manasota Track Club. With all participants receiving ribbons, custom awards will be given to overall categories and age group winners, first through sixth place. Proceeds benefit the “Summer in the Parks” Adopt-A-Camper scholarship program.

For online registration or a full schedule of events, visit scgov.net/parks or active.com. Participants can also complete and return a flier/registration form, which are available at any county recreation center, library or government building. Early packet pickup takes place at the New Balance Sarasota store, 1872 Stickney Point Road, from 3-6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7.

Siesta Beach is located at 948 Beach Road, Sarasota. Race-day registration starts at 7 a.m. The one-mile fun run begins at 8 a.m., and the 5K run is at 8:20 a.m. The holiday-themed costume contest begins at 9:30 a.m.

Big Cat Habitat is a great way to spend the day in Sarasota, FL

Liger at Big Cat Habitat

Liger at Big Cat Habitat

One of the most popular questions we get from guests at Tropical Beach Resorts is ‘What can we do with the kids?’ There are so many great attractions other than the gorgeous white sand beaches in Sarasota. Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary is one of my favorites! It’s located about 20 minutes from the hotel out near Fruitville and I-75 and is so worth the trip.

Let me just start with this…they have not one, but two Ligers! Yes, Ligers….I had no clue that they existed in real life and thought they were just a made up animal from the Napoleon Dynamite movie.  But wow, what magnificent creatures with incredible markings, colors and their overall size is breathtaking! They are the biggest cat in the world, yet do not exist naturally; actually they are a hybrid of a female Tiger and a male Lion.

We spent this past Sunday there and had such a great experience and am already looking forward to my next time. There are so many cool animals, not just the Big Cats. The Habitat is full of interesting and exciting animals and also has a daily Exotic bird show as well as Animal Encounter. You can feed hotdogs to the bears and you can feed meat to the Siberian Tigers! There is a petting zoo which is great for the kids and the goats are sure to give you a little nudge requesting treats.

How the Habitat Began

The story of Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary began in 1987 and was founded by Kay Rosaire, who enjoys more than 30 years experience working with and caring for exotic animals. She and her son Clayton do the daily demonstrations with the animals. The Rosaires’ special relationships with the animals makes every demonstration thrilling to watch, with the opportunity to see the animals in a close encounter of the exotic kind! The Habitat is a tremendous opportunity to learn and experience exotic and endangered Siberian Tigers, Royal Bengal Tigers, African Lions, and rare White Tigers.

The Habitat has an incredible website and drone footage of their property, it is very cool. This is a great way to spend some time with the family and learn lots of really neat stuff about a wide variety of animals. They also have a food stand with Icees, hot dogs, sausages, lemonade and more. There are plenty of shaded areas around the habitat to take a break and the arena where the Animal Encounter is held is air-conditioned.

If you enjoy the outdoors, this attraction is a must-visit in the Sarasota area. In business since 1939, “Florida’s Sweetest Attraction” — Mixon’s Fruit Farm — has an open air tram named the Orange Blossom Express which takes you on a tour through the orange groves. Before or after the tour, be sure to get directions to the Gazebo & Koi Pond to view the wedding area and feed the Koi. There is so much do to and see at Mixon’s Fruit Farm. They have been Growing and shipping Florida’s finest oranges and grapefruit since 1939.

Mixon’s citrus groves are home to injured and orphaned Florida wildlife. Mixon’s rehabilitates the animals for release back into the wild and their mission is to promote education, appreciation, and respect for wildlife. Some animals are released, while some must find permanent rescue homes.

Tours last approximately one hour at 11am, 1pm and 3pm, Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday. Please call ahead because they only operate if the weather permits.

Labor Day is Monday, September 5th. To many folks, Labor Day marks the end of the hot summer season. Many see this 3 day weekend as their last chance to get out and take a vacation before summer is gone. The kids have already gone back to school, for the most part, but get to enjoy one last hurrah at the beach before the levels of homework get too intense and for the Northern climates, it’s going to start getting cold!

Meaning of Labor Day

Labor Day is observed in the U.S. on every first Monday in September as a day to recognize the contributions of American workers of all industries to the U.S. economy. It is also meant to give workers a well-earned day off to relax at home or to get out for recreation. “It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country,” the Labor Department said in its history of the holiday.

Siesta Key is gearing up for the end of summer busy weekend and will welcome lots of out-of-town visitors to the little island this weekend. So, here are a few tips to help you make the most out of your Holiday Weekend!

-If you’re planning on hitting the beaches of Siesta Key, get there early! Parking will be tough this weekend with the influx of visitors, so an early arrival time will be your best bet to find a spot at the coveted Siesta Key Public Beach or one of the island’s 13 other beach accesses.

-Take advantage of the many different free ride options that are available on the island. These fun little vehicles operate on tips only and are a great way to get around and not have to worry about parking.

-Reapply sunscreen often. Even though it may be cloudy, the UV levels are very high right now.
