With two main concentrations of businesses and then also a handful of great options on the south end of Siesta Key at Turtle Beach, there are lots of really cool, unique locations that you can discover.

8th Annual Siesta Key Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition November 10th thru the 13th – This Weekend!

We are within a few days of one of our favorite Siesta Key events! The official countdown has begun with some giant mounds of sand already delivered and being shaped into the main central displays with the local sponsors and other supporters of this huge event. The Siesta Key Chamber estimates that nearly 40,000 people will come and visit the Siesta Key Beach to view these brilliant sculptures intricately and carefully carved out of the brilliant quartz white sand of Siesta Key! This event is one of the most popular of the year and draws guests and artists from all over the world.  Recently named America’s #1 Beach, the Siesta Key Crystal Classic has become a favorite of the professional sand sculptors who have competed here.

This year promises to be the best Crystal Classic yet with extended evening hours, so excited spectators will be able to view the sculptures lit up with the soft rays of the Siesta Key sunset and other colored lights. The entertainment, shopping, and other events will continue into the evening hours until 9PM On both Friday and Saturday nights.

This is a very family friendly event with sand sculpting demonstrations and lessons in the Learning Curve Tent. Kids can get hands on and hands in the white sand and see how their skills match up to the amateurs and pros in this creative event, as well as learn the differences between our very special Siesta Key sand and other beaches’ sand.

Great entertainment will fill the fall air with popular groups like Jah Movement, Reverand Barry & Funtastic Soul featuring Hellacious Horns, Kettle of Fish, One Night Rodeo and Tropical Ave. Band. Special guest appearances will also happen by ABC7’s Bob Harrigan, and the Master Sandsculpters themselves.

For the complete schedule of Events, view : https://www.siestakeycrystalclassic.com/event-info/festival-schedule

According to the Siesta Key Chamber’s Information, ADA accessibility will be the best on Monday  as beach wheelchairs will be available and most crowds will be slightly thinned out so better viewing and gazing options will be available

We will actually be volunteering at the event on Saturday night, so look for a few representatives from Tropical Beach Resorts to be around in some different areas of the event and stop in to say hi! We are super excited to be involved and to volunteer as we love to talk to visitors, guests and locals alike. It’s always such a pleasure to meet new people and to hear guest testimonials about their love for Siesta Key Beach, hear about their family memories made, and fun vacation stories.

Sculptures will be returned to their sandy flat state on 11/14. After the sculptures have been enjoyed, it’s super fun to watch the guys on the diggers demolish them…I’m still a kid at heart who loves to play with sand buckets and tonka toys:)

Original Photo of the Kiss

Love to explore attractions and oddities in the city you are visiting? Sarasota has a 26 foot tall statue called Unconditional Surrender on the Sarasota Bayfront.  It is an oversized recreation of a famous photograph from the end of the war celebration in Times Square. The nameless serviceman dipped an unknown nurse for a kiss to celebrate the end of the World War II on August 14, 1945.   It is known as the “Unconditional Surrender.”

The picture — titled “Unconditional Surrender” — gained world fame. It was on the front of “life” magazine shortly after and it’s always been called the kissing sailor.

There are actually a series of sculptures by Seward Johnson resembling a photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt, on V-J Day in Times Square, but said by Johnson to be based on a similar, less well known, photograph by Victor Jorgensen. The original statue was first installed in Sarasota, then was moved to San Diego, CA and New York City. Other versions have been also been installed in Hamilton, New Jersey, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Normandy, France

The statue is made of aluminum and able to withstand winds from a category 3 hurricane. Unconditional Surrender was hated by Sarasota’s Public Art Advisory Committee when it first arrived and called tacky by many, but the public loves to imitate the big kiss and dip when they stop for a photo op.

The sculpture was purchased by Jack Curran, a WW II veteran, and with support from numerous Sarasota veterans and organizations, and he was able to donate the sculpture to the City of Sarasota.

Visitors to the city love to stop by and take their picture with the famous smooch.

Stand Up Paddleboarding, (SUP), is quickly becoming one of the most popular sports on Siesta Key! Recently, I decided to try paddle boarding myself. I wanted to be able to share a first- hand experience with our interested Tropical Beach Resort guests. Let me start by saying, I don’t think anyone would use the word athletic when describing me, and I can’t ever recall being referred to as graceful in my lifetime. Dont’ get me wrong, I like to play outside and have fun, but I was seriously wondering if I would be falling off my SUP in the first five minutes. ..

I called a couple of my friends (also fun- loving middle-aged women) that had never gone paddle boarding before and asked them if they would take a leap of faith, grab a couple boards, and hit the calm beautiful Sarasota waters with me while we made a video.

We decided to take a popular Siesta Key instructor with us on this journey who quickly taught us the ins and outs of SUP, and offered to give us a private Pilates class on the water. Courtney Kees, from Studio RubyLake, immediately put us at ease, and we began to trust very quickly that we had a pretty good chance of staying on our boards. One of the first things I noticed was how spectacular our views were as we were standing up tall, spotting dolphins. I found my experience to be exciting and yet peaceful at the same time. It dawned on me that this was actually a really great way to get a super overall workout. Paddle boarding makes us use our balance and strength to remain upright while we propel ourselves in the water. This means that we are truly using almost every muscle at some point while still being gentle on our bodies. (Taking it easy on the joints and knees, thank-you!) Cardio fitness is said to greatly improve with SUP, and although I have not been doing it long enough to confirm this, I can confirm that it’s a great core workout and has helped me increase my balance. My girlfriends and I really loved practicing Pilates on our boards. It definitely added some extra balance to the activity. The ambiance of being on the water along with the sunshine made the experience feel a lot more like fun than exercise.
