Siesta Key is named the #1 Beach

Siesta Key is at it again! We are so thrilled for this top honor, yet again! Dr. Beach made a major announcement that he was resetting his list and destinations that had previously been named #1 could receive the top honor again. This morning, Siesta Key was named the #1 Best Beach on Dr. Stephen Leatherman’s Top 10 Beaches in the US for 2017. Dr. Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach, is Professor and Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University. Siesta Key was also honored with the Most Prestigious #1 Ranking in 2011 by Dr. Leatherman, #2 Beach by Dr. Beach in 2016, and then also named the Best Beach in America by Tripadvisor in 2015. Leatherman says Siesta Key Beach has “some of the finest, whitest sand in the world attracting sand collectors from all over. Siesta Beach has clear, warm waters ideal for swimming. The beach is hundreds of yards wide in the shape of a crescent, due to the anchoring of onshore ricks to the south. This beach is great for volleyball and other types of recreational fitness.” “Siesta Beach is not only a beautiful location for beachgoers, but it is also an environmentally healthy beach and offers first-rate beach safety for its visitors.”

Dr. Leatherman also said it’s a “sin not to walk on the beach barefoot.” This sand is

The Gulf Side of Turtle Beach: There’s more to Siesta Key than just the pristine white sandy shores. There is another wonderful natural phenomenon called Turtle Beach. It is located on the south end of the island of Siesta Key and is like a whole different world just waiting for you to explore it!

Located just 2.5 miles South from the Stickney Point Bridge, you’ll find the entrance to Turtle Beach. This part of the island is much more relaxed and less traveled than the Central and Northern parts of the island. You can find plenty of room on the sand to spread out and enjoy the sunshine. This beach has all the amenities for family and friends to enjoy a full day of fun and relaxation. You can throw a game the horseshoe courts, have a picnic in the shelter, play a game of volleyball, or just lounge on the shore while the kids have fun in the beachside playground. The water at Turtle Beach gets deeper more quickly than the water on the rest of the island. Some adults may prefer this because you don’t have to go so far from the beach to find chest deep water.

The sand is darker than the sand on Siesta Key and the beach is much steeper of a slope than it’s Northern sister Beach, Siesta Key. The landscape of the beach allows for a perfect destination for shelling and snorkeling. The trees bordering the Turtle Beach Campground and the beach make for a gorgeous landscape. There is natural foliage and grasses that line the border of the beach making for a beautiful feel of island paradise.

This beach is also one of the “Blue Wave” Certification beaches for its cleanliness and environmental conservation.

The County just recently completed a 21.5million dollar renourishment project on Turtle Beach. The renourishment, which was approved by county commissioners in 2011, required several years of planning and coordination by the project team through the state and federal permitting process, as well as design and construction. The work was completed last month, in time for the start of sea turtle nesting season. There was cause to celebrate after a tropical storm rolled through, as there was minimal damage and erosion which occurred during the storm.

Whether you decide to take a kayak out in the waters, or just relax at Turtle Beach, you will love the amenities that the Turtle Beach area has to offer. There are beautiful benches to sit and enjoy the waters, picnic tables and other conveniences. For more park info visit: https://www.scgov.net/beaches/Pages/Turtle.aspx

We hope that you take advantage of all that Siesta Key has to offer. There is so much more than the main Siesta Key Beach! Let our local, knowledgeable staff help you decide on your next adventure!

Siesta Key Beach floods during Tropical Storm Colin

Siesta Key Beach floods during Tropical Storm Colin

Siesta Key is bracing for major amounts and rainfall and isolated areas of flooding while Tropical Storm Colin will bring heavy rain with winds 25-40 mph to Sarasota and Manatee Counties on Monday through Tuesday morning. Florida Gov. Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency ahead of Tropical Storm Colin’s arrival in the Big Bend area. Forecasters expect 3-6 inches of rain with 8 inches in isolated areas. There is also a possibility of isolated tornadoes as the lines of storms move in.  As of 5 p.m. Monday, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center placed the storm about 190 miles west of Tampa. The storm is anticipated to arrive in the Big Bend area in the afternoon or evening hours Monday. While the  area is expected to escape a direct hit from the storm, forecasters are bracing for heavy rains, increased tornado risk and the potential of high tides 1 to 3 feet above normal in the region. The entire Tampa Bay area has also been placed under a flood watch until early Tuesday morning.

Tropical Storm Andrea on June 6 before landfall in Florida

Tropical Storm Andrea on June 6 before landfall in Florida

Here’s a little tidbit of very interesting information…three years ago today, Tropical Storm Andrea brought flooding to Cuba, the Yucatan Peninsula, and portions of the East Coast of the United States in June 2013. The first tropical cyclone and named storm of the annual hurricane season, Andrea originated from an area of low pressure in the eastern Gulf of Mexico on June 5. Despite strong wind shear and an abundance of dry air, the storm strengthened while initially heading north-northeastward.

Later on June 5, it re-curved northeastward and approached the Big Bend region of Florida. Andrea intensified and peaked as a strong tropical storm with winds at 65 mph (100 km/h) on June 6. A few hours later, the storm weakened slightly and made landfall near Steinhatchee, Florida later that day. It began losing tropical characteristics while tracking across Florida and Georgia. Andrea transitioned into an extratropical cyclone over South Carolina on June 7, though the remnants continued to move along the East Coast of the United States, until being absorbed by another extratropical system offshore Maine on June 10. So you’re on a family beach vacation with young children and you just know that while they can’t wait to get to the beach, their interest won’t last much past building the first sand castle. What to do once that happens? Here are a few kid-friendly beach ideas . . . ‘local mom approved’:

-Build that sandcastle, but don’t forget the moat around it! Have your child run back and forth to the shore for water for the moat.

Build a Siesta Key sandcastle

Build a Siesta Key sandcastle

-Try a drip castle. Mix sand with water and drip from your fist from above. When the slurry mixture lands and builds upon itself, it is a sight to see.

-Write your child’s name in the sand with your finger, take a picture of it with his or her feet in the frame. If your child is old enough, have them write their own name.

-Draw a road in the sand for cars or trucks. Add shell roadblocks, sticks, just use your imagination. If you didn’t bring any cars, make believe that a shell is a car. Siesta Key Kid friendly vacation ideas

-Roll a ball. Dig very shallow trenches, build hills for the ball to follow, the kids will love this.

Identify different types of Siesta Key seashells

Identify different types of SIesta Key seashells

-Go on a treasure hunt for shells. You can try to identify them on the Internet once you get back to your room if your child is interested or categorize them by size, shape, color. Remember to leave all live animals on the beach.

-Build your youngster’s vocabulary. Beach vacations are great for exposing kids to new words. Identify boats, jet skis, kayaks, seagulls, shells, crabs, seaweed, etc. Identify different types of seashells

-Teach children the importance of sun safety. They can learn this as early as age 2, it’s all about repetition at this age. Drink lots of water, reapply sunscreen often, and wear a hat. The phrase “No red spots, that’s the goal.” seems simple and effective.
