The Siesta Key sand has beaten famous, tropical vacation spots like the Bahamas, Hawaii and Grand Cayman for it’s texture and overall quality.
What makes Siesta Key sand such a special sand?
The sand is actually made of of 99% of pure quartz crystal mineral, ultimately derived from the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Over many, many years the mineral grains were carried by rivers into the Gulf and further south along the Florida coastline. The quartz sand comes from igneous rock, the kind of rock that was once molten. Quartz is a very hard mineral just below the diamond on the harness scale.
This fine sand has passed through two or more of geologists refer to as ‘Aeolian cycles.’ These cycles pertain to wind activity in the study of geology and weather and specifically to the wind’s ability to shape the surface of the Earth (or other planets). Winds may erode, transport, and deposit materials and are effective agents in regions with sparse vegetation, a lack of soil moisture and a large supply of unconsolidated sediments. Although water is a much more powerful eroding force than wind, aeolian processes are important in arid environments such as deserts and beaches.
Nobody can calculate how much time has passed since Siesta Key sand first appeared from fragmented rock. We do know that Siesta Key sand is quite old. We know this not only because of the very fine grains, but also because other components of the original rock, such as feldspar, mica and other minerals, have almost completely disappeared. This leaves only the extremely hard quartz.
