There is a host of activities for you and your family to try during your stay at Siesta Key. One of the most relaxing is fishing. You can visit any of the mesmerizing, serene fishing spots in the area, or you can join one of the many fishing charters that are run every day. However, there are a few things you need to know before you get started, including whether you need a fishing license.

The rules on fishing licenses at Siesta Key are very straightforward. If you are a non-resident aged 16 or older you need to get a fishing license before you start. The only exception is if you are fishing as part of a boat charter. Fishing licenses are available at Sarasota County Courthouse, as well as local bait and fishing stores such as CB’s Saltwater Outfitters. One of the benefits of going to a local store is that you can gain a little local knowledge while you are there and check on any catch restrictions that are in place.
Once you have your fishing license, the world is your oyster, and there are several wonderful fishing spots to choose from. Each has its own magic, but also different facilities, so make sure to check those before you leave:
One of the best sites for families is Turtle Beach Lagoon, offering the choice of surf casting from the shore, off the seawall or the pier. The site also features ample parking, restrooms, grills, and a playground, allowing you and your family to make a day of it.
For couples looking for a quieter angling area and maybe the chance to get in some snorkeling as well, Point of Rocks is the perfect choice. Situated just south of Crescent Beach, it is the only rock formation on Siesta Key and has the additional bonus of underwater caves and coral to explore. Just be aware of swimmers in the area when casting your line.
