Siesta Key is named the #2 Top Beach on Dr. Stephen Leatherman’s Top 10 Beaches in the US for 2016. Dr. Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach, is Professor and Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University. He received his Ph.D. in Environmental (Coastal) Sciences from the University of Virginia, and completed his undergraduate degree in Geosciences at North Carolina State University.

Leatherman says Siesta Key Beach has “some of the finest, whitest sand in the world attracting sand collectors from all over. Siesta Beach has clear, warm waters ideal for swimming. The beach is hundreds of yards wide in the shape of a crescent, due to the anchoring of onshore ricks to the south. This beach is great for volleyball and other types of recreational fitness.”
