Oscar Scherer is just 6 miles south of Sarasota and is a true local gem. The park is located just off US 41 but as soon as you leave the road you are back to nature in a beautiful flatwoods preserve, home to the pretty little blue and white Florida Scrub Jay. It is the perfect place to get your fix of Florida wildlife and nature while on your vacation to the Sarasota area. You can enjoy fifteen miles of trails through the park that allow you to go hiking, bicycling, and wildlife viewing. One of my personal favorites is canoeing or kayaking for a few hours along South Creek, a blackwater stream that flows to the Gulf of Mexico. You can also go fishing along the creek or lake Osprey, which is also the park’s swimming area. It is easy to make a day trip out of the park with the picnic areas that line South Creek which are equipped with grills and pavilions for a fun family outside dinning experience.
